Belize Part 2

The first morning we got up, had some breakfast and went out for snorkel.  We didn't take the boat out because there were plenty of reefs within walking distance and we need to get used to the currents before we went out deeper.  I immediately lost myself an swam off on my own exploring everything.  I found myself an hour later a 1/4 mile from shore by the break water next to a moray eel.  I started heading back in when I realized how far away I was from everyone else.  When I got back to shore, I noticed a burn on my left forearm.  I was stung by a coral somewhere along the reef. Feels bad man.  Went to the bathroom and peed on myself to ease the pain.

After lunch we took the boat out and went into deeper water.  We were only about 12 feet deep, but there were much larger corals and fish out there.  I found some huge sting rays. I tried to catch one but I didn't want them to Steve Irwin me, so I covered my heart with my left hand while I chased them down.  They were too fast but occasionally I sneaked up and got to touch them. We go back in around 4:30pm, the first day felt like such an accomplishment. We all headed to the bar after dinner.

At the bar, you either drank coke, the local beer, or rum drinks.  The rum drinks were very cheap compared to what you pay in the states. During happy hour a rum drink was $2.50 USD, had roughly 2 shot of rum in it, and the rum was 80 proof.  Needless to say, not many people were sober after dinner.

A few of the people in my class were smart enough to bring fishing rods. We started jigging with 3 pronged hooks to catch the little fish under the deck, and we used them as live bait to catch larger fish.  We caught mostly jacks and snapper, but occasionally we would get in a fight with a tarpon.  All the fish were good fights, some took 15 minutes to land.  Pretty much everyone was tired and went to bed by 10pm.  It was depressing for me because I am a night owl and prefer to stay up as long as there is stuff to do.  For the first few days our schedule was pretty much the same.  Get up, snorkel, lunch, snorkel, bar, dinner, bar, fishing, bar, bed.

Time for pictures.
We had a late night scorpion encounter.  Someone got stung by this little bastard and had to suffer through the drunken local remedy.

  19. Are you ever afraid the boat will leave without you like in Open Water

  20. Not really, the boat was full of just my friends, a professor, and the local captain. He was a very friendly and trustworthy person. With the exception of shark ray alley (which will be in a blog later on) we weren't so far from shore that we couldn't swim it if we had to.
